Robert Lawrence Stine, born October 8, 1943, is an American novelist who writes horror fiction for children. Goosebumps, the series Stine created, sold more than 400 million copies in 35 languages and grew into a franchise of two television series, video games, comics and two feature films. Fear Street, Stine's horror sequence for teenagers, passed 80 million copies and was adapted for film. Stine has been called the Stephen King of children's literature. The listing runs to 590 titles, from How to Be Funny (1978), published as Jovial Bob Stine, to How to Train Your Dummy, scheduled for 2027.

Shel Silverstein

Shel Silverstein wrote children's poetry, nonsense verse and pictorial humour, and worked as a cartoonist, songwriter and musician. Silverstein lived from 1930 to 1999 and was raised in Chicago. His 25 catalogued books span 1955 to 2017, from Take Ten to Runny Babbit Returns, and run short at a median of 95 pages, with the 1960s his densest decade. Silverstein's drawings appeared in newspapers and magazines including Playboy during the 1950s, and Uncle Shelby's ABZ Book (1961) was his satire for adults. The Giving Tree (1964), Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic are among his most acclaimed titles, and the Missing Piece books form one of his two series.

Provence made Peter Mayle's name, in travel writing about French village life, food and neighbours. The earlier work is very different: illustrated guides for children and parents, starting with 'What's Happening to Me?' (1975) and 'Where Did I Come From?' (1977), plus the Wicked Willie cartoons.
