O. Henry was the pen name of William Sydney Porter (1862-1910), an American writer known for short stories and for the surprise endings that close them. The Gift of the Magi (1905), The Cop and the Anthem (1904), A Retrieved Reformation (1903) and The Ransom of Red Chief sit among the best known, and Cabbages and Kings (1904) is his novel. New York manners and customs supply much of the material, collected in The Four Million. Porter was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, and became a licensed pharmacist at 19.
