Born in Falkirk, Brown wrote in his spare time from his teenage years while spending two decades in the UK Civil Service, latterly as Director of Screening for NHS Scotland. Travel, and the disorientation of the first hours in an unfamiliar city, shaped The Book of Doors. Brown lives near Edinburgh.
