Aya de León, born in 1967, is an American novelist and activist who teaches at the University of California, Berkeley. De León first drew national notice in the San Francisco Bay Area as a spoken-word poet and hip-hop theater artist, and is of Puerto Rican, African-American and West Indian heritage.
