Suzanne Collins built The Hunger Games on Panem, a wrecked North America where a rich Capitol governs 12 districts held in poverty. Punishment for an old rebellion takes the form of a yearly battle royale: each district hands over two children between 12 and 18, and the last one alive is named victor.
