Boris Leonidovich Pasternak (1890–1960) was a Russian and Soviet poet, novelist and literary translator. The first poetry collection, My Sister, Life, was written in 1917 and printed in Berlin in 1922, and that collection soon gained importance in the Russian language. Pasternak wrote Doctor Zhivago (1957), a novel spanning the period from the 1905 Russian Revolution to the Second World War. Russian audiences still favour Pasternak's translations of plays by Goethe, Schiller, Calderón de la Barca and Shakespeare.
