Photo of Carlos Fuentes, author

Carlos Fuentes (1928-2012) was a Mexican novelist and essayist, an ambassador to France, and a central figure in the Latin American Boom of the 1960s and 1970s. Where the Air is Clear (1958) opens a catalogue of 33 titles. Aura and The Death of Artemio Cruz both date from 1962; Terra Nostra followed in 1975, then The Old Gringo in 1985 and, two years later, Christopher Unborn. Mexico, its politics and its history supply the material, in novels, short stories and criticism, and Adam in Eden (2009) is the last dated entry.
