Charles John Huffam Dickens (7 February 1812 to 9 June 1870) was an English novelist and journalist born in Portsmouth. At 12, Dickens left school to work in a boot-blacking factory while John Dickens, the writer's father, was held in a debtors' prison; three years later came a return to school, and then a start in journalism.
