Charles Sheffield (25 June 1935 to 2 November 2002) was an English-born mathematician, physicist and science fiction writer who served as president of both the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and the American Astronautical Society. The Web Between the Worlds (1979), about building a space elevator, appeared at almost the same time as Arthur C. Clarke's The Fountains of Paradise on the same idea.
