Charlotte Brontë (21 April 1816 to 31 March 1855), married name Nicholls, was an English novelist and poet and the elder sister of Emily, Anne and Branwell Brontë. Jane Eyre (1847) first appeared under the pseudonym Currer Bell and is now counted a classic of English literature.
