Clifford Irving (1930-2017) was an American novelist and investigative reporter. Irving's fame rests on a fake Howard Hughes autobiography due for publication in 1972. Hughes denounced the book and sued McGraw-Hill, and Irving and his collaborators admitted the hoax. Irving received a sentence of two and a half years for fraud and served 17 months.
