Dan Rather, born Daniel Irvin Rather Jr. in 1931, is an American journalist and commentator who anchored a national evening news programme. Rather's career started in Texas and turned national in September 1961, when reporting on Hurricane Carla saved thousands of lives. Rather later covered the Kennedy assassination from Dallas in 1963, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Gulf War, September 11 and the Iraq War.
