Daniel Defoe was an English writer, journalist, merchant and spy, born around 1660 and died in 1731. Robinson Crusoe (1719) is his famous novel, with Moll Flanders following in 1722 and Roxana: The Fortunate Mistress in 1724, and Defoe stands among the earliest proponents of the English novel in Britain. Four editions of Robinson Crusoe appeared before the end of 1719, and the book gave its name to a whole genre, the Robinsonade. The catalogue records 61 Defoe titles from An Essay upon Projects (1697) onward, pamphlets and essays among them.
