Chester started with romance novels before moving into other genres, and wrote novels tied to the television series Alien Chronicles and Earth 2. Chester holds the John Crain Presidential Professorship at the University of Oklahoma, teaching writing in the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication, and Jim Butcher names Chester as a primary mentor.
