Elif Shafak, born in 1971, is a Turkish-British novelist, essayist, political scientist and activist who writes in both Turkish and English. Istanbul, Turkey's social conditions, immigrants and outsiders recur across her fiction, which includes The Bastard of Istanbul and The Forty Rules of Love. By 2025 Shafak's work had been translated into almost sixty languages.
