Fred Hoyle was an English astronomer who wrote both popular science and science fiction. Hoyle worked out the theory of stellar nucleosynthesis in the B2FH paper alongside Margaret and Geoffrey Burbidge and William Alfred Fowler, rejected the Big Bang in favour of a steady-state model, and argued for panspermia as the origin of life on Earth. The term Big Bang was Hoyle's own coinage, made on BBC Radio. The catalogue holds 41 titles from The Nature of the Universe (1950) to A Different Approach to Cosmology (2000), including the novels The Black Cloud (1959), A for Andromeda (1962) and Fifth Planet (1963). Hoyle lived from 1915 to 2001 and was founding director of the Institute of Theoretical Astronomy at Cambridge.
