Gayl Jones is an American writer, born on November 23, 1949, in Lexington, Kentucky, and a key figure in 20th-century African-American literature. Jones was 25 when Corregidora (1975) appeared; Toni Morrison edited the novel, and James Baldwin and John Updike praised it. Eva's Man (1976) drew less acclaim, and some critics called its portrayal of cruelty and violence dangerous. The Healing and Mosquito followed in 1998, and The Healing reached the National Book Award shortlist. The 14 catalogued books also include poetry such as Xarque And Other Poems, plus Palmares (2021) and The Unicorn Woman (2024).
