Gil North was the pen name of Geoffrey Horne (1916-1988), a British writer of detective stories. North's novels about Sergeant Cluff, set in Yorkshire, were adapted by the BBC into a 1960s television series called Cluff. Horne was born in Skipton and died there, studied at Ermysted's Grammar School and at Christ's College in Cambridge, and served as a civil servant in Britain's African colonies from 1938 to 1955. Twelve books carry the North name, from Sergeant Cluff Stands Firm (1960) to Corpse for Kofi Katt (1978), at a median 184 pages.
