Photo of Günter Grass, author of the Die Danziger series

Günter Grass was a German novelist, poet, playwright and artist who took the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1999. The Tin Drum (1959) opens both the catalogue and the Die Danziger group, continued by Cat and Mouse (1961) and Dog Years (1963); Grass was born in the Free City of Danzig, now Gdańsk in Poland, and returned to that city throughout the fiction. Drafted at 17, Grass served in the Waffen-SS from late 1944, was taken prisoner by US forces at the end of the war and released in April 1946, having trained as a stonemason and sculptor before the writing began in the 1950s. 35 titles are catalogued, ending with Of All That Ends (2015). Grass lived from 1927 to 2015.
