Harold Bell Wright (1872-1944) sold fiction on a scale no American novelist had reached before: he is credited as the first to sell a million copies of a novel and the first to earn a million dollars from writing it. Wright produced 19 books between 1902 and 1942, along with stage plays and magazine articles, working in Christian romance and Christian westerns set around the Ozark mountains, with clergy, printers and young men as his figures. That Printer of Udell's (1902) opens the run, followed by The Shepherd of the Hills (1907), The Winning of Barbara Worth (1911) and The Re-Creation of Brian Kent (1919). More than 15 films were drawn from his stories, among them Gary Cooper's first major picture, The Winning of Barbara Worth (1926), and John Wayne's The Shepherd of the Hills (1941).
