Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) was an American author and abolitionist, and a member of the Beecher family. Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852) set out the harsh conditions of enslaved African Americans, reached millions as both novel and play, energised anti-slavery opinion in the American North and provoked anger in the South. Stowe wrote more than 30 books, among them novels, three travel memoirs, and collections of articles and letters.
