Hazel Holt, born in 1928 and died in 2015, was a British crime novelist who published her first novel in her sixties. Sheila Malory investigates across all 22 books, set in the imaginary English town of Taviscombe, from Gone Away (1989) to Death is a Word (2014). Holt worked at the International African Institute in London, where she met the novelist Barbara Pym; Holt later wrote Pym's biography and completed one of her unfinished novels. My Dear Charlotte builds a Regency murder mystery out of the language of Jane Austen's letters to her sister Cassandra.
