Henry Miller (1891-1980) was an American novelist, short story writer and essayist who broke with existing literary forms to build a semi-autobiographical novel out of social criticism, stream of consciousness, philosophical reflection, character study, surrealist free association, explicit sexual writing and mysticism. Tropic of Cancer (1934), Black Spring (1936), Tropic of Capricorn (1939) and the Rosy Crucifixion trilogy draw on Miller's years in New York City and Paris, and all were banned in the United States until 1961.
