James L. Haley, born December 14, 1951, is an American writer on Texas and Western history who has also published novels. Haley grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, attended L. D. Bell High School in Hurst, graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington in political science, and left the University of Texas School of Law after two years to write full time. Two Spur Awards from the Western Writers of America, in 2002 and 2011, sit among the honours.
