Kesey grew up in Springfield, Oregon and graduated from the University of Oregon in 1957; he started One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, his psychiatric-hospital novel, in 1960 after a creative writing fellowship at Stanford, and its 1962 publication was an immediate commercial and critical success.
