San Diego native Ken Kuhlken played semi-pro baseball in Tijuana and studied philosophy, then English, at San Diego State University. Kuhlken later sang and played guitar in a rock and blues band, taught high school, and attended the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop. His short stories ran in Esquire, drew an honourable mention in Best American Short Stories and earned him a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. His Hickey Family Mystery series features Tom Hickey, with private investigators and Los Angeles among the subjects. The 21 titles run from Midheaven (1980) to The Holy Grail (2020).
