Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910) was a Russian writer, born Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy into an aristocratic family. Tolstoy's early reputation rested on the autobiographical trilogy of Childhood (1852), Boyhood (1854) and Youth (1856), and on The Sebastopol Sketches (1855), drawn from service in the Crimean War.
