Lew Wallace (1827 to 1905) was an Indiana lawyer, Union general in the American Civil War, governor of New Mexico Territory, politician, diplomat, artist, inventor and author. Wallace served in the Mexican-American War, was Indiana's adjutant general and led the 11th Indiana Infantry Regiment. Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1880) is Wallace's best known novel.
