In Search of Lost Time, published in seven volumes between 1913 and 1927 and running to roughly 1.25 million words, is the work he is known for; critics rank him among the most influential novelists of the twentieth century. Proust was born in the Auteuil quarter of Paris to a wealthy family, his father Adrien a pathologist and epidemiologist.
