Photo of Mary Roberts Rinehart, author

Mary Roberts Rinehart, who lived from 1876 to 1958, wrote American detective and mystery fiction and has often been called the American Agatha Christie. Her first mystery novel, The Circular Staircase (1908), introduced the “had I but known” style of narration. Rinehart is also the earliest known source of the phrase “the butler did it”, traced to her 1930 novel The Door, though those exact words never occur in her writing. She reported the experiences of front line soldiers in the First World War, one of the first women to reach the Belgian front. Sixty-five titles are catalogued, including the Tish, Hilda Adams and Miss Cornelia Van Gorder series.
