Mary Shelley (1797-1851), born Mary Godwin, was an English novelist. Her 15 catalogued titles open with Frankenstein (1818), a Gothic novel and an early instance of science fiction, and extend through The Last Man (1826), The Fortunes of Perkin Warbeck (1830), Lodore (1835) and Falkner (1837), with Maurice, or The Fisher's Cot printed in 1998. Shorter works including The Mortal Immortal and Transformation appeared in 1831. Monsters, scientists, plague and the end of the world run through the subjects. Shelley also edited and promoted the poetry of her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley; her parents were the philosophers William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft.
