Nevil Shute was the pen name of Nevil Shute Norway, an English novelist and aeronautical engineer who lived from 1899 to 1960 and spent his later years in Australia. The two names were kept apart on purpose, so that his employers at Vickers and his fellow engineers took the engineering seriously. On the Beach and A Town Like Alice are among the novels.
