Rachel Renée Russell, born March 13, 1959, created Dork Diaries and its spin-off The Misadventures of Max Crumbly. Russell grew up in Saint Joseph, Michigan, studied at Northwestern University and then law school. Dork Diaries uses a diary format with doodles and comic strips to record Nikki Maxwell's struggle through middle school, drawing on Russell's own middle school years, and Russell's daughter Nikki illustrates it.
