Philip Marlowe is the private investigator of the hard-boiled fiction of Raymond Chandler (July 23, 1888 to March 26, 1959), an American-British novelist and screenwriter. Chandler turned to detective fiction in 1932 at age 44 after losing an oil company executive job in the Great Depression. The first short story, Blackmailers Don't Shoot, ran in the pulp magazine Black Mask in 1933, and the first novel, The Big Sleep, followed in 1939. Chandler published seven novels in life; Robert B.
