Robert Louis Stevenson (13 November 1850 – 3 December 1894), born Robert Lewis Balfour Stevenson, was a Scottish novelist, poet, essayist and travel writer. Treasure Island, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), Kidnapped (1886) and the verse collection A Child's Garden of Verses (1885) are the works Stevenson is best known for. Born and educated in Edinburgh, Stevenson lived with serious bronchial illness yet wrote prolifically and travelled widely.
