Shūsaku Endō (March 27, 1923 – September 29, 1996) was a Japanese novelist whose work reflects the outlook of a Japanese Catholic. Silence (1966), a historical novel, was filmed by Martin Scorsese in 2016. Endō received the Akutagawa Prize and the Order of Culture, and Pope Paul VI admitted Endō to the Order of St. Sylvester.
