Stephen Jay Greenblatt, born 7 November 1943, is an American literary historian who has held the John Cogan University Professorship of the Humanities at Harvard since 2000. Greenblatt is one of the founders of new historicism, the set of critical practices Greenblatt also calls cultural poetics, and the term has carried weight in literary study since the early 1980s. Greenblatt serves as general editor of The Norton Shakespeare and as general editor and contributor to The Norton Anthology of English Literature.
