Stieg Larsson (Karl Stig-Erland Larsson, 15 August 1954 to 9 November 2004) was a Swedish journalist, writer and far-left activist. Larsson wrote the first trilogy of the Millennium crime novels, published from 2005 onward after Larsson died of a sudden heart attack. The catalogue opens with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2005), The Girl Who Played with Fire (2006) and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (2007). Sweden filmed the trilogy as three motion pictures, and the United States filmed the first. The publisher later commissioned David Lagercrantz and then Karin Smirnoff to continue the series. The Expo Files (2011) collects Larsson's journalism.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo follows Mikael Blomkvist, a disgraced journalist hired by a wealthy family to investigate a decades-old disappearance. He works with Lisbeth Salander, a young computer-hacking genius, and together they uncover family secrets, corruption and violence.
