Tobias Jonathan Ansell Wolff, born June 19, 1945, is an American short story writer, memoirist, novelist and teacher of creative writing. The memoirs This Boy's Life (1989) and In Pharaoh's Army (1994) are the books Wolff is known for; The Barracks Thief, one of two novels among four short story collections, won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. President Barack Obama awarded Wolff a National Medal of Arts in September 2015. Wolff taught at Syracuse University from 1982 to 1997 and has taught at Stanford University since, as Ward W. and Priscilla B. Woods Professor in the School of Humanities and Sciences.
