Washington Irving was an American writer, essayist, biographer, historian and diplomat of the early nineteenth century. Rip Van Winkle (1819) and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1820) are the two stories he is remembered for, both collected in The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. Letters of Jonathan Oldstyle (1802), Salmagundi (1808) and A History of New York (1809) came before them. Irving also wrote biographies of Oliver Goldsmith, of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and of George Washington, along with histories of fifteenth-century Spain taking in the Alhambra palace, Columbus and the Reconquista. Twenty-seven titles are catalogued, reprints included, the most recent dated 2022.
