Deverell, born in 1937, is a Canadian criminal lawyer and civil liberties activist, and the debut novel Needles (1979) drew on that legal work and won the Seal First Novel Award. Trial of Passion took the Hammett Prize and the Arthur Ellis Award for Best Novel in 1998, and April Fool won the Arthur Ellis again in 2003.
