Sir William Golding (1911-1993) was a British novelist, playwright and poet. Lord of the Flies (1954), his debut, is the book he is known for, and twelve further volumes of fiction appeared in his lifetime. Rites of Passage took the Booker Prize in 1980 and opened the sea trilogy To the Ends of the Earth; the Nobel Prize in Literature followed in 1983 and a knighthood in 1988. Golding was a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and The Times placed him third among the 50 greatest British writers since 1945.
