William Hjortsberg (February 23, 1941 to April 22, 2017), known as Gatz, was an American novelist and screenwriter who wrote the screenplay for the film Legend. Hjortsberg's novel Falling Angel (1978) became the film Angel Heart (1987), and in 2015 the novel was adapted into an opera composed by J. Mark Scearce with a libretto by Lucy Thurber.
