Aubrey/Maturin is Patrick O'Brian's sequence of naval historical novels set during the Napoleonic Wars. The friendship between Captain Jack Aubrey of the Royal Navy and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon, natural philosopher and intelligence agent, carries the whole run. Master and Commander (1969) opens it, the last completed novel appeared in 1999, and a twenty-first book, left unfinished when O'Brian died in 2000, reached print in 2004 as 21: The Final Unfinished Voyage of Jack Aubrey. Twenty completed novels and that fragment make up the series, most of which reached The New York Times Best Seller list.
