Gilead is a quartet of novels by Marilynne Robinson set among clergy families in Iowa. The first book is a letter begun in 1956 by the Reverend John Ames, near the end of his life, for his young son: an account of his father and of his grandfather, a minister who came west to fight for abolition, preached men into the Civil War and served as a Union chaplain. Gilead (2004) won the National Book Critics Circle Award and the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and Home (2008), Lila (2014) and Jack (2020) complete the set.
