M*A*S*H began with a 1968 novel about three army doctors at a U.S. Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War, written by the surgeon H. Richard Hornberger with the war correspondent W. C. Heinz under the pen name Richard Hooker. That book produced a film and a television series. Hornberger wrote the sequel M*A*S*H Goes to Maine (1972), and the run then sent its surgeons to New Orleans, Paris, London, Morocco, Las Vegas, Hollywood, Vienna and San Francisco. 15 books end with M*A*S*H Mania (1977).
