John Flanagan's Ranger's Apprentice follows an orphan taken on as apprentice to a Ranger, one of the trackers, archers and fighters who serve the King of Araluen. Flanagan first wrote 20 short stories for his son to draw him into reading, then rebuilt them a decade later into The Ruins of Gorlan, published in Australia on 1 November 2004.
