Richard Hannay is John Buchan's adventurer, a man caught up in intelligence work, pursuit and the First World War. The Thirty-Nine Steps (1915) opens the sequence, and Greenmantle, Mr. Standfast, The Three Hostages, The Courts Of The Morning and The Island of Sheep (1936) follow. Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 film The 39 Steps, loosely drawn from the first novel, carried the character far beyond the books. In his memoir Memory Hold-the-Door, Buchan traced part of Hannay to Edmund Ironside, a field marshal from Edinburgh who spied during the Second Boer War.
