In 2018 Amitav Ghosh won the 54th Jnanpith award, the top literary prize in India. Born on 11 July 1956, Ghosh builds novels with layered narrative methods that question identity, both national and personal, with a particular focus on South Asia. Colonialism and climate change are subjects of both the historical novels and the non-fiction. Ghosh attended The Doon School in Dehradun, completed a doctorate in social anthropology at Oxford, and worked for the Indian Express in New Delhi as well as in universities.
