Ann Petry, born 1908 and died 1997, worked in the United States across novels, short stories, children's books and journalism. Her debut, The Street, reached print in 1946 and sold past a million copies, a first for a novel by an African-American woman. The Narrows followed in 1953. Also catalogued are Country Place (1947), The Drugstore Cat (1949), Harriet Tubman (1955), Tituba of Salem Village (1964) and Miss Muriel and Other Stories (1971). The Library of America gathered The Street, The Narrows and some shorter nonfiction into a single 2019 volume. Recorded subjects include witchcraft trials, cats, history and children's fiction.
